Sparge Water Calculator

Use this sparge and strike water calculator to determine how much sparge water will be necessary to rinse your mash and get you to the proper pre-boil volume.

Out of all our calculators this is hands down the most used. If you constantly brew different beers like us, this calculator is your best friend. Each new batch of beer has different amounts of grain, boil times etc. If you want to hit your numbers, you have to know how much water you need!

Batch Size: The volume you plan to put in the fermenter. You can select gallons or liters.
 
Grain Bill: The total amount of grain you will use in the mash. You can select pounds or kilogram
 
Boil Time: The total time you will boil the wort. You can select hours or minutes.
 
Trub Loss: The amount of trub and wort left in your boil kettle. You can select gallons or liters.
 
Equipment Loss: The amount of wort left in the bottom of your mash tun. You can select gallons or liters.
 
Mash Thickness: The ratio of water to grain you plan to use in your mash. An average value to use is 1.33. You can select Quarts/Pounds or Liters/kilograms.
 
Grain Temperature: The temperature of your grains at dough-in. You can select Fahrenheit or Celsius
 
Target Mash Temperature: The temperature at which you plan to hold your mash. You can select Fahrenheit or Celsius
 
Wort Shrinkage(pct): The percentage which the volume of boiling wort shrinks when cooled to pitching temp. The well accepted value is 4%. 
 
Grain Absorption Constant(gal/lb): The number of gallons of water absorbed per pound of grain during the mash. This number can vary based on the crush of the grain and several other factors. Normally this value is between .10 and .20.
 
Percent boil-off per Hour(pct/hr): The percentage of wort boiled off into the atmosphere. This number can vary based on your system the strength of the boil and several other factors. Commonly this value is between 5-15%. This can be calculated by noting the pre-boil and post-boil volumes at the one hour mark on your system.
