“Because it’s the IPA America deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we’ll brew it black. Because it can take it. Because it’s not a traditional pale ale. It’s a silent roast, a hoppy protector. A Dank Knight.”
–Beer Commissioner, probably
(actually, probably not)
We all know that “Black India Pale Ale” is an oxymoron; how can it be both “black” and “pale”? While sometimes called a “Cascadian Dark Ale”, the colloquial name seems to have stuck. Becoming wildly popular with brewers and craft beer drinkers alike (and with good reason, too!), this beer has the dryness and hop-forward flavors of your favorite IPA, but it is darker in color. It’s as dark as the blackest stout, but it lacks the strong roasted/burnt flavors that most people associate with the black color. Extremely drinkable, with small hints of toasty roast, this beer comes straight out of the Pacific Northwest. There is a smidgeon of roast, but it is restrained and is actually complementary to the huge hop aroma and flavor.

The Dank Knight Black IPA - All-Grain Recipe Kit Instructions
India Pale Ale came into the brewing scene as a measure in practicality actually. In the 1700s, sailers had trouble getting their beers to India due to the long voyage around the Cape of Good Hope. Brewers would add larger additions of hops, and increase the alcohol content, and thus, the beers could survive the voyage in a time before refrigeration and avoid being flat and sour upon arrival.

Only my second kit after a several year hiatus from brewing. Might want to figure a touch more water or change efficiency due to the hop loss but the end result is just the right amount of hops and roast. I opted to keg hop mine and the aroma is fantastic!
