Authentic Düsseldorf Altbier (Literally German for “Old Beer”) is rare to find outside of Germany. It’s a shame, because this style has it all. The flavor is malty and smooth, with notes of dark bread. Well-hopped but not overly hoppy, this beer balances all of the character of the noble hops with the wonderful rich malt flavor. Our Düsseldorf Altbier is a bit less sweet than the Northern German Altbier, with a bit more hops and less caramel flavor. Try them both to see which one you prefer!
Store cold once it’s in the bottle, or lager in a carboy or keg for 3-4 weeks for most authentic “Old Beer” flavor and lager-like finish. A yeast starter (or two packages of yeast) is recommended for best results due to the cooler fermentation temperature.

The term "Alt" (German for old) is an allusion to the old style of brewing beer in Germany. This style dates back many centuries, but the term "Altbier" wasn't coined until the 1800's, when the "New Beer" (lagers) started threatening the old style. Before that, to the Düsseldorfers, Altbier was just Bier! Traditional Düsseldorf Altbiers have German Pilsner Malt as a base with light and dark Munich malts making up the backbone of the specialty malts portion of the grain bill, tossed with small amounts of darker malts for caramel flavor and darker color. The traditional "Old-Style" beer uses Spalt hops for bittering, flavor, and aroma, but Hallertau Mittelfrüh is an excellent substitution for homebrewers who can't get their hands on the elusive noble hop.

yep, I love variety. this one is dark;no complaints. But MUST age out, for true yumyum AT LEAST 4 weeks. it is drinkable before then, but as with most grainy malty beers, until properly aged has an edge that must smooth. then the true flave can be appreciated. I'm lovin' it!
Das Altbier is what I labeled this baby on tap. A fantastic clone of an altbier from the west side of Germany (Dussoldorf).
Malty with a slight bitterness at the end. Gave it to a friend who is a fan of German beer styles and he loved it. Had about 5 pints of it.
I added a pound of Munich malt to it which bumped up the color and abv at 5.5% and it came out perfect. Used White Labs Dusseldorf Alt Yeast.
I would definitely brew this again.
