With the cooler fall and winter temperatures available to much of the US, many brewers can get ready for spring and summer by brewing a Classic American Pilsner beer recipe. Unlike commercial mass-produced American lagers, this beer has flavor that will surprise you! There is a great balance between malt and hops, with the crisp finish distinctive of lagers. Think of it as a refreshing and enjoyable beer for all seasons, from spring lawn work to fall football season- and don't forget to have it on hand for watching winter hockey games! Very “clean”, with a hint of malt sweetness and a touch of hops in the flavor, this balanced Pilsner beer recipe is an American favorite, with good reason.

A yeast starter, or two packages of yeast (if using liquid yeast), is recommended for best results due to the cooler fermentation temperature. Temperature control during fermentation is very important for success with this Pilsner beer kit, and the beer should ferment at 50 degrees for approximately 10-14 days before a diacetyl rest is done (holding at 60-65 degrees for 24-48 hours), and then the beer improves further with lagering. To lager is “to store” in German, and in this case means to hold for approximately 4 weeks at 34-40 degrees before packaging.

Using traditional German pilsner malt and noble hops, this lager is a crisp and refreshing spring or summer day reward for those who are patient through the winter lagering process.
